FAQs

About Up in Smoke Welding Apparel

WHEN DID THE COMPANY START?

We established Up in Smoke Welding Apparel Inc. in 2015.

HAVE YOU EVER WELDED BEFORE?

Before starting Up in Smoke Welding Apparel, the owner and founder Mac Schurr was a Journeyman Red Seal Welder. He started welding at 18 and travelled all over Western Canada for various jobs. At the height of his welding career he had three employees running his welding trucks.

WHERE ARE THE PRODUCTS MADE?

We designed and manufactured our products in Calgary, Alberta, Canada unitl July 2021. Since then we have moved our business down to Katy Texas and moved all of our manufacturing to Chicago Illinois. All of our materials are sourced from the United States. We are proud to keep our business local.

HOW ARE YOU SUSTAINABLE?

We are deeply committed to doing our part to lessen the waste in our world. As all our materials come from North America, we have a lower carbon footprint than our competitors. We also source our leather from an environmentally-friendly tannery, who are leaders in the space. Lastly, we do not ship our products in plastic and do our best to minimize plastic in our manufacturing facility.

WHY ARE YOUR PRICES HIGH?

We offer a premium line of products and our premium price reflects that. It’s important to know that we are committed to keeping our production local, and we use only materials sourced from North America. As such, we pay our team a higher wage and we pay higher costs than if our products were potentially made offshore. If you ask us, the price to keeping our company here is worth it.

HOW CAN I PAY FOR YOUR PRODUCTS?

We never want price to be a barrier from being able to buy our premium line of products. We offer payment over four easy installments through AfterPay. Select this option at checkout.

WHAT PRODUCT IS GOOD FOR STUDENTS ?

HOW DO YOU CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE?

All our product designs go through rigorous field testing by welders across North America. Once the products launch we are always soliciting feedback and additionally, we do customer surveys to ensure we can continue serving the needs of welders in the best way.

HOW LONG DO THE PRODUCTS LAST?

Our products last longer than anything else in the market. Now, our products are not indestructible and they will get holes and burns, but they will continue to offer superior protection longer than anything else.

Fit and Materials

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE?

We use materials that have been vetted by North American safety standards and tested by welders. Throughout our product line we use: Kevlar stitching, Mount Vernon Mills and Tencate Twill, CarbonX Fleece, CarbonX Repel and leather.

HOW DO YOU DESIGN YOUR PRODUCTS?

Our designs are proprietary, and patented. We realized early that what existed on the market for welders just wasn’t cutting it. We took up the challenge to ensure our products are designed specifically to meet the unique needs of welding, looked good and keep you protected. We work with a local designer and then do rigorous field tests for each design to ensure it’s perfect.

WHAT'S YOUR SIZING CHART?

Measure an existing garment on a flat surface and do not measure on your body. Our sizing chart uses three key measurements: chest, sleeve length, and body length. We have designed our products to offer superior fit for the work welders do. Please use our size chart for help determining your size, or call or email our team for extra support.

WHY DOES THE LEATHER HAVE IMPERFECTIONS ON IT?

We use high-quality leather and do our best to cut out the parts with imperfections on them. The marks are part of the animal's life, from scratching on barbwire to being branded. We use real leather instead of fake leather, and sometimes this results in slight imperfections.

How do I care for my product?

HOW DO I WASH MY FR WELDING SHIRT (NOVUS OR ZESTOS), OR FR WELDING JACKET (TESTUDO OR SHIKORO)?

  1. Keep them separate. Flame resistant (FR) clothing should be laundered separately from your other clothing to prevent cross-contamination. We recommend buying a simple $4 laundry bag to clean these garments in.
  2. Turning the garments inside out before laundering will help prevent streaking
  3. Avoid washing with items containing Velcro and zippers.
  4. Machine wash in cold to warm water with mild laundry detergent.
  5. Liquid detergents or other products containing hydrogen peroxide may not be used because of the risk of damaging the FR finish.
  6. Avoid using bleach or any fabric softeners.
  7. Hang dry.
  8. Do not dry clean.
  9. You can iron the Kabuto, Novus, Testudo, Shikoro, and Zestos

HOW DO I WASH MY FR OR NON-FR THORAX WELDING HOODIE?

  1. DO NOT PUT IN A WASHING MACHINE. It's not the material we are worried about. It's more the leather shrinking and becoming hard.
  2. For a cheaper alternative, we recommend filling the sink with some mild detergent and cold to warm water.
  3. From there, you can dip the garment up to the leather and hand wash the fleece. Ring out the excess water.
  4. Hang dry.
